Pulmonology

Pulmonology is a discipline which involves diseases and conditions affecting the lungs. Specialists having expertise in this field are called pulmonologists. Deemed as a subspecialty of internal medicine, proficiency in this field requires sufficient knowledge of internal medicine and other subspecialties. The branch focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the respiratory system, including the lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity and chest wall. When a complicated situation arises in the diagnosis of a respiratory condition, pulmonologists are consulted.

Pulmonologists often take part in specialized pulmonary medicine practices and engage themselves in multidisciplinary group activity. They even serve as consultants to other practitioners in some cases. Having proficiency in respiratory disorders and complicated procedures such as mechanical ventilation, pulmonologists often act as overseers of intensive care units in hospitals. For effective treatment, pulmonologists require training in critical care medicine along with pulmonary medicine. This dual role has earned them the title 'Intensivists'.

Pulmonologists are instrumental in treating structural, inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic disorders that affect the lung cavity, lung parenchyma, pleura and airways.
